First Flight is UNT's official welcome program. This week is designed to help new students begin their college experience on the right foot. First Flight offers programs that prepare students for upcoming educational opportunities, as well as programs where the students get to let loose and meet their fellow peers.
For UNT's First Flight, the College of Visual Arts & Design will present incoming freshmen students with their first optional assignment: to produce an 8" x 8" self-portrait on their choice of medium. Students who chose to participate have their artwork displayed in their first exhibition at CVAD, titled "Introductions Please: Self Portraits of the Class of 2021." The works are on display in the Lightwell Gallery of the Art Building through August 30, 2017.
During the event, students are divided into numerous breakout sessions led by faculty from various departments. Here, the students are able to ask questions about what it is like to attend classes at CVAD. Additionally, CVAD faculty present a variety of topics and ideas during the Pecha Kuchas (quick, simple presentations where each faculty member shows 20 slides and speaks 20 seconds about each).
At the end of the event, students enjoy Beth Marie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream while viewing the self-portraits in the Lightwell Gallery. This year there will be a display board stationed on the 1st floor in the Art Building until the morning of Tuesday, September 5th. Students can sign their name, leaving their legacy for future students to discover. The squares will be divided and cut into sections and construction crews will drop these between the walls in a designated area of the new Art Building!
